GPUS - Resolution To Pose Challenge To Two-Party System PASSES!
Originally proposed by Michigan and California, the Resolution To Pose Challenge To Two-Party System was passed overwhelmingly by the National Committee with a 63 Yes - 15 No - 8 Abstain vote count. This proposal, the latest attempt to bring the two tendencies of the GPUS together after the fractious 2004 Presidential election was authored, among others, by Michigan Green Karen Shelley. My thanks to her and all who have helped our party to move forward. GO WE GO!

Immigrant Worker Protest, Friday Morning
Dear Friends,
20 Latino workers were dismissed/walked out of Lotus International Company. They were not paid overtime, faced discrimination and health and safety issues, and were forced into a pay decrease with a higher production rate. When they complained yesterday, they were fired and immediately replaced. They want to demand the overtime pay they are owed for several years of work, want their jobs back and want to maintain their higher level of pay.
Please join them at their picket line at 7am this Friday morning (April 21). We are meeting at La Sed at 6am (on the corner of Clark and Vernor in SW Detroit) to caravan to the company. You may join us at La Sed or meet us at the factory. The address is 6880 Commerce Blvd, Canton, MI 48187.
They want as much support as possible, but they also want to keep it enough on the down low so that the company will be surprised at their picket.
Please foward to your lists.

NY Times covers Wolverine Immigrant firings
Though there is no mention of Monday's demonstation outside of Wolverine Meat Packing in the Eastern Market, this article covers the issue of the workers there who were fired after attending the immgrants rights march in Detroit on March 28. That event drew almost 30,000 people according to eye witness reports. Mondays' action at Wolverine drew coverage from CNN radio and local news media, far exceeding the coverage for our local 3rd anniversary of the Iraq war march and rally. Is the immigrants rights issue of greater importance than the war? What do you think?

Federal court supports onerous 3rd party requirements
While admitting that a better way for 3rd parties to gain access to the ballot line is possible, a federal judge let stand a Pennsylvania requirement for petition signatures of at least 2% of the highest vote-getter's total in the previous election. In PA, this amounts to 67.070 signatures. Those of is who were around for our 2000 petition effort here in Michigan remember the amount of work and the level of organization it entailed. We even paid for some part of those signatures and carried that debt for a couple of election cycles. I understand the need to show a certain level of support before a political party gets on the ballot, but most state requirements are so burdensome as to be a barrier to entry to the political process.
